Donors are pivotal: Nonprofits are critical for communities to thrive

Kris Kewitsch | Executive Director, Charities Review Council | September 2024

When you give to nonprofits, you are helping neighbors connect to responsive, personalized services from critical organizations that address needs government agencies and for-profit entities often don’t or can’t fill.

When an organization is driven by a mission rather than financial gain, it has the flexibility to tackle issues that may not be profitable for businesses or prioritized by government agencies. There tends to be more space in the nonprofit sector for:

  • Flexibility and innovation. Without the bureaucratic constraints or short-term election cycles of government, nonprofits can be more agile and responsive to emerging issues. They can experiment with innovative solutions, some of which may later be embraced, scaled, and funded by larger institutions.
  • Community engagement. Deeply rooted in addressing local needs, nonprofits’ work is often driven by direct engagement with community members. They can tailor programs to specific populations without the broader limitations or profit motives that may influence government or business decisions.
  • Advocacy. Working closely with those most impacted, nonprofits are uniquely positioned to represent the interests and amplify the voices of underrepresented groups. They can lead grassroots movements and push for systemic change in ways that government and corporations won’t.

When you give generously of your time, talents, and treasure to nonprofits, you can feel good knowing that you are powering a critical component of our communities, organizations that provide vital services for our neighborhoods to thrive.
