January 2026 Response
Kris Kewitsch | Executive Director, Charities Review Council | January 2026
Minnesotans are generous. In moments of need, the instinct is to jump into action: to give time, money, energy, and support. Currently, Minnesota is experiencing an influx of ICE activity across communities in the Twin Cities and beyond. As a result, many people are moved to values-aligned giving that supports immigrant friends, family members, and neighbors.
Responsibly meeting the moment as a Smart Giver can look many ways. We at Charities Review Council understand that holistic community support relies on a combination of established nonprofits, direct aid, and grassroots efforts.
- When giving to nonprofits, consider those with established missions and whose work is trusted in the community. Often, these are organizations you are already aware of or already support. Increasing your engagement at a time of stress can help nonprofits pivot to immediate community needs.
- When giving directly to neighbors or a cause, while it’s important to be responsive to emergency needs, take a moment to be sure your funds are trackable, meant for a distinct purpose, and are sent to a reliable source.
- Grassroots efforts emerge in moments of stress. Many community organizations and organizers are well-equipped to build out quick and effective community responses. This is a giving pathway that allows you to support a specific, ongoing push that is often related to a particular geographic area, action response (i.e. trainings, grocery drop-off, legal aid, etc.), or community. The Attorney General’s Office reminds us that when giving to crowdfunding campaigns, it’s still important to identify multiple points of verification before giving money.
However you’re moved to give, Smart Giving practices apply, and Charities Review Council has resources to help you decide where to lend your support. Consider referencing our list of Meets Standards organizations or take a look at the Smart Giver Newsletters for more on informed giving.
In addition, Minnesota Council of Nonprofits has compiled a helpful guide that includes nonprofit-specific guidance, reliable news sources, a vetted donation guide, and more. Resources: supporting community during ICE operations
Similarly, GiveMN has produced a nonprofit-specific guide for mapping out next steps during ICE’s presence in Minnesota.
