Nonprofit Spotlight: Assistance League of Minneapolis/St. Paul

Meet the Assistance League of Minneapolis/St. Paul!

Located in Richfield, Minnesota, and one of 120 chapters nationwide, the Assistance League is dedicated to meeting the basic needs of children and adults in the Greater Twin Cities area through programs developed and implemented by its member volunteers.

Q: What is unique about the Assistance League, and what would the community miss without your organization?

A: We are an all-volunteer, member-driven organization, which allows us to put a high percentage of the money raised back into the community. We work directly with our community partners to direct our funds and program activities to the areas of most need each year.

Assistance League’s programs are developed to meet needs in the community that are not being addressed by others. We ask, “What do you need?” or “What can we do for you?” instead of “Here’s what we do”. Unique, critical needs we fill that might otherwise go unaddressed include making Assault Survivor Kits® available statewide, providing bedding for the Minneapolis Police Department’s Sexual Crimes Unit, or implementing our Smart Start program in partnership with school districts to support students with clothing, bus passes, feminine hygiene products, and more.

The Assistance League earned the Meets Standards® seal through Charities Review Council’s Accountability Wizard® online tool.

Q: How has assessing your organization with the Accountability Wizard® strengthened your capabilities or led to improvements?

A: The Council’s tool helps guide us through the process to Meets Standards®, and recently led to the creation of an Annual Report supplement for our website to elevate transparency and impact.

Assistance League is becoming a more diverse, inclusive organization and appreciates the different skills and diversity our members bring to the organization as we enact our Strategic Plan while maintaining focus on our mission of “volunteers transforming the lives of children and adults through community programs”.
