Impact and Programs

Accomplishments Last year, Habitat Douglas County built four new affordable homes, approved six new homebuyers, and completed 14 AIP projects. Homebuyers contributed 1,067 volunteer hours to help build their homes alongside volunteers. They also learned about homeownership, maintenance, budgeting, and life skills. A statewide Habitat Homeowner Impact Study showed that 92% of homeowners said their lives were better since moving into their Habitat home. They reported feeling more optimistic about their children's education, having more money, and feeling more connected to their community. Habitat Douglas County's work also benefits the community by creating jobs, stimulating the economy, and generating increased economic activity. Homeowners also contribute to the community by paying taxes. In 2022, Habitat homeowners paid $67,327 in local taxes. In short, Habitat Douglas County's work has a positive impact on both families and communities.
Current Goals Since 2015, Habitat Douglas County has become a top-performing affiliate, consistently ranking 3rd in Minnesota for new construction and repairs. Our board approved a We're driven by ambitious goals for the coming year aiming to serve even more families: 1. Building More Homes: Increase construction from 4 to 5 homes, with plans for further expansion. Address Douglas County's housing gap outlined in the 2023 Alexandria Housing Update's call for 8-10 affordable homes annually. Secure long-term land control through the Summer Meadows development, allowing for 42 affordable homes over 10 years. 2. Serving More Families: Continue providing affordable mortgages and building a brighter future for families. Increase affordable homeownership opportunities and pathways to homeownership 3. Expanding Our Programs: Grow the Aging in Place (AIP) program, exceeding the number of new homes built with 25 families served. We have lower the eligible age to 62+ from 65. Leverage expertise from a dedicated Construction Coordinator and Occupational Therapist to ensure safety and accessibility. 4. Optimizing the ReStore: Celebrate 10 years of success and explore expansion options to increase donations and financial sustainability. With 95% of every dollar directly invested in programs, Habitat Douglas County is a responsible steward of resources. We dream big and seek partnerships to continually expand our reach and impact
