Nonprofit Spotlight: Wings for Widows

Meet Wings for Widows!

Wings for Widows helps widowed men and women navigate the trauma of loss to regain financial stability and the chance for a brighter future. With free, professional, personalized coaching and education, widowed individuals receive guidance and encouragement at a pivotal point in life. Wings for Widows engaged nearly 2,100 clients in 2023, working toward their vision of ensuring all widowed persons have access to financial literacy education.

We recently asked Wings for Widows,

Q: What would the community miss without your organization?

Widowhood is overwhelming, confusing, and incredibly stressful. Many widowed people find themselves making financial decisions during intense grieving, often without complete information or the guidance of a trusted professional. Wings for Widows brings professional financial literacy and education to the widowed community through one-on-one financial coaching between a widowed person and a Certified Financial Planner.

Without our unique focus on the widowed community, widows and widowers would have little resources to turn to in terms of answering all of the questions surrounding the financial confusion that comes with the loss of a spouse and the loss of income. Many surviving spouses have never paid bills or budgeted on their own before. Some may have been out of the workforce for some time and discover they need to work again. Others are left with minor children at home to support and are completely overwhelmed by the changes in their finances while consumed with grief. Without Wings for Widows, the widowed community would face these challenges alone.

Wings for Widows earned the Meets Standards® seal through Charities Review Council’s Accountability Wizard® online tool.

Q: How has assessing your organization with the Accountability Wizard® strengthened your capabilities or led to improvements?

Assessing our organization has strengthened our overall focus and KPIs for 2024, which include board support in all fundraising efforts, improving volunteer training best practices, accommodating for client growth, and defining board roles and responsibilities.

Based on the Accountability Wizard® suggestions, Wings for Widows completely revamped our HR policies, payroll, employee benefits, and diversity, equity, and inclusion training/best practices for 2024.
