 | | | Make Room This Winter. Donate Goods and Autos Have green living on your mind? Donating your gently used goods is a not only great way to declutter, but recycle too. Many nonprofit organizations would be thrilled to take and make good use of your gently used clothing, furniture, appliances, vehicles, and a wide range of other household items.
Ready to make a donation?
Before you pack everything up, here are a few things to keep in mind about your donation:
- Be sure all items are in good condition; many charities are forced to pay for the disposal of items in poor condition. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 toughened the rules for non-cash donations to charities. Make sure that you donate items that are useable, because tax deductions will not be allowed for items in less than good condition.
- Obtain receipts from the nonprofit organization if you plan to request a tax deduction. All 501(c) 3 organizations can accept contributions and offer donors a tax deduction to the full extent of the law. Make sure to ask an organization if they are a 501(c) 3 organization before you make a donation.
- Some charities are willing to pick items up; others require donors to drop them off. Keep in mind organizations that pick up items may not be immediately available to come to your house.
- Donating a car is more complicated than donating material goods. Your tax deduction is determined by how a charity uses your auto donation.
